Old Mission Hall
The Old Mission is a bijou, character property standing in its own grounds of approximately half an acre. It originally dates back to the mid 19th century and was built in the early Gothic revival style as a school for agricultural labourers by the Gurdon Rebow family. It was evidently known as 'the penny a week school,' and is thought to date back to approximately 1832. It was taken over around 1890 by the Church of England as a Mission Hall for meetings and worship. The original school room and house were used for worship, and the chapel was licensed for baptisms up until the 1960s.

Recent History
The site and buildings were purchased by the present owners in 1976, and it has since been extended yet still retains enormous character. The wealth of features displayed cover many periods and uses over its unique past. For example, the main school room or mission hall is now a spacious vaulted drawing room with splendid fireplace, a fine arched stone mullion stained glass window, and a clear view log burning stove. There are many cathedral arched windows and doors, and much that has been added is of the finest quality and in keeping with the Gothic era. The gardens back onto farmland and ancient woodland adjacent, yet being so convenient for the borough of Colchester and its excellent facilities.

The Area
Crockleford Hill is a small community of about ten dwellings on the Bromley Road, all well served by a Tesco Express and hair salon, as well as a small parade of shops in St Johns with supermarket and takeaways etc. At the suburbs of Highwoods and St Andrews there are also Tesco and Sainsburys supermarkets. London bound commuters have access to Manningtree or Colchester North railway stations with an excellent commuter train link to London Liverpool Street in a journey of just under one hour. Colchester town centre is less than three miles drive with three shopping precincts, restaurant facilities, entertainment and a town steeped in history with its Norman castle. There are an exceptional range of schools throughout the area both state and private, as well as the highly rated Royal Grammar School for boys and Colchester County Girls High School. There are good road links via the A133 to the coastal towns of Walton-on-the-Naze, Frinton-on-Sea, and Clacton-on-Sea via the A12 linking between Chelmsford and Ipswich, with connection north bound to the A14 and Midlands beyond, and in the opposing direction to the M25. Westwards via the A120 leading via Braintree to Stansted Airport and the M11 beyond. This part of Colchester leading towards the Stour Valley and the Suffolk border is renowned for its rolling countryside and the Dedham Vale with its connection to the artist Constable. There are excellent leisure facilities in the area, including golf clubs, sailing clubs on the rivers Blackwater, Colne and Stour, as well as the east coast resorts with their sandy beaches.
